Rare Black Forest Bell Ringer Clock by Jacob Baurele in Cathedral-Form Case
This rare Black Forest bell-ringer clock by Jacob Baurele is an exceptional late-19th-century example of German animated horology, distinguished by its architectural case and complex musical movement.
The hand-carved wooden case takes a dramatic cathedral form. Richly carved Gothic fretwork, pronounced flying buttresses flanking the sides, while a stepped base that gives the clock a commanding presence. An open bell tower housing two bells rises from the roof peak, reinforcing the ecclesiastical theme.
Gothic bone Roman numerals display the time upon a wooden dial with pierced bone hands. Carved tracery frames the clock throughout, echoing the Gothic motifs found throughout the case. Beneath the dial, two arched doors, each conceals an animated figure. At the quarter hours, the right door opens to reveal a nun whose head and arms move as she rings the bells. At the hour, the left-hand door opens to reveal a monk striking the hour bells, creating a layered and theatrical sequence of motion and sound.
A brass three-train movement powers the clock, striking the quarter-hour on four saucer bells. The backplate is stamped “I.B.”, firmly attributing the movement to Jacob Baurele. Dating to the late 1800s, this clock represents an advanced and imaginative expression of Black Forest clockmaking.
Only two other examples of Bell Ringer clocks are currently known, both held in private collections.
