Victorian Onyx Cross Pendant
This striking Victorian cross pendant is beautifully styled with an abundance of black onyx set into warm 15K yellow gold. Likely a piece of mourning jewelry inspired by Queen Victoria and her tremendous influence on fashion and jewelry. Dating to 1890, it corresponds to the Queen’s exceptional 40-year mourning period for Prince Albert. Such remarkable designs quickly gained popularity in jewelry fashions of the day.
This special pendant is artfully crafted into a cross with closely set pieces of primarily diamond and teardrop-shaped onyx punctuated by tiny gold beads. All of the onyx pieces are framed by millgrain detail. A single seed pearl glows from the circular center and is also framed in millgrain and accented with gold beads. The pendant dangles from a 14K yellow gold bail.
The adept artistry and skill of Victorian craftsmanship are highly prized today. Everything was intended to be ornate and eye-catching in the Victorian era. Jewelry, including mourning pieces, followed suit. This lovely pendant is a wonderful addition to any antique jewelry collection or a meaningful personal token.
