17th Century Dutch Animated Tall Case Clock by Jan Breukelaar

This exquisite animated tall case clock dates to the mid-1700s and is a wonderful representation of Dutch clockmaking.

The clock features a commanding presence, standing over 9 feet tall with an impressive tiered arched top hood. An elaborately carved tympanum adorns the top with delicate pierced fretwork, adding a layer of architectural grandeur above the arched door. Figural finials crown the clock case. At the center, Atlas, carrier of the world, shoulders heavens, flanked by two angels heralding trumpets.

Encased in burl walnut, the case is a marvel of design that would have been of great luxury in its day. Fine marquetry inlays grace the wood with intricate banding around the door and base, adding refinement and visual depth. The trunk of the clock boasts a scalloped-edge door adorned with a symbolic cast ormolu depiction of Father Time set against a glass panel. The clock’s base swells outward in a curved bombe shape, providing a sturdy and stylish foundation.

An 8-day movement powers the clock with a complex Dutch striking system. Each hour, the clock marks the number of hours on a large bell and again with the small bell at the half-hour. Further, it will signify the first quarter hour with a single strike on the large bell, then mark the third quarter hour with a single strike on the small bell. The face of the clock is an art piece in itself. The dial features an engraved silvered chapter ring with elegantly rendered Roman numeral hours and Arabic minute markers. Additionally, a moon dial rests above the 6 o’clock position, enhancing the clock’s utility and charm. At the 12 o’clock position, a seconds dial with a central date window offers excellent functionality.

Below the main dial, the clock surprises and delights with a three-dimensional animated diorama. Two men push a young woman in a tree swing within an idyllic park scene. The playful illustration brings incredible charm and whimsical movement in time with the pendulum. Lovely polychromed images enhance the picturesque animation, complete with a lake, bridge, trees, and family out for a stroll.
