Bavarian Hand Carved Mermaid Chandelier
This wonderful Bavarian mermaid chandelier dates to the mid 1800s. Hand-carved in beautiful detail depicting a lovely maiden upper torso evolving into a mermaid lower portion with stag antlers that sweep backward from her hips. Each antler is fitted with two wrought iron scrolling arms supporting candle holders, four lights in all. The polychromed medieval clad female figure is adeptly painted in warm rich colors from her headdress to her tail. She holds a decorated shield likely indicative of a merchant or guild. The chandelier suspends from three iron link chains.
The fascinating combination of antlers, full-torsoed female wood figures, and light dates back to the 1500s. Examples can be found in the collections of various museums internationally.
