18th Century English Arch-Top Tall Case Clock by James Pike of Newton Abbot
Stately and refined, this arch-top floor clock is a wonderful example of late 18th-century English clockmaking. Crafted by James Pike of Newton Abbot in the late 1700s, the clock features a richly hued Honduran mahogany case, complemented by paneled doors and an arched bonnet that accentuates the classical proportions of the piece.
The clock houses an 8-day, two-weight-driven movement with a resounding bell strike on the hour. The time displays upon Roman numeral hours and Arabic numeral minutes, at five-minute intervals. A subsidiary seconds dial resting below the 12 o’clock mark, and a date aperture above the 6 o’clock mark add further complexity. At the top is an eagle with its wings outstretched, flanked by a flowing banner engraved with the Latin phrase “Tempus Fugit” (“Time Flies”). Delicate engraved maritime and pastoral depictions appear throughout the dial. Figures of men working the land and enjoying the idyllic countryside adorn each corner, while the images of ships adorn the center.
The maker’s name, James Pike, appears prominently engraved across the lower center, along with the location Newton Abbot.
Fully restored and accompanied by a 1-year warranty, this distinguished clock seamlessly blends horological excellence with fine English cabinetry.
