French Oil on Canvas, Signed Corot
A lovely French oil on canvas depicting a bucolic forested landscape with a house and a woman tending vegetation alongside a stream. This painting is attributed to a follower of Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. Well executed with an emphasis on naturalism and atmosphere. Corot (1796-1875) is regarded as a pioneer of plein-air painting, taking inspiration from painting directly from and in the outdoors. He encouraged younger artists and students to copy his paintings as a learning exercise. Remarkably, it is believed that, in collaboration with his students, he allowed them to sign his name on replicas they painted of his landscapes, and that he would even sign pupils’ paintings himself. An intriguing quality of Corot’s character.
The painting resides within a substantial giltwood frame richly embellished with foliate that perfectly complements the idyllic forested landscape scene.
