Swiss Orchestral Cylinder Music Box
A masterful work of Swiss mechanical and musical artistry, this exceptional cylinder orchestra music box combines enchanting sound with rich visual entertainment.
Inside, a 13-inch cylinder movement performs eight distinct melodies, accompanied by a mechanical orchestra of instruments. A reed organ, five tuned bells with charming bumblebee strikers, a snare drum, and castanets each add texture and rhythm to the performance. The ensemble produces a layered musical effect that is deep, resonant, and remarkably lifelike for its era. The case is crafted of rich Brazilian rosewood, exhibiting a beautiful natural grain, bordered by contrasting crossbanding. Fine marquetry inlays adorn the case, depicting a harp, horn, and scrolls bound with laurel leaves, symbolizing harmony and the art of music.
The interior lid retains its original hand-engraved tune card, a rare survival that lists each composition played by the box, adding to its originality and visual appeal. A striking fusion of Swiss precision, decorative artistry, and musical engineering, this piece captures the grandeur of the late 19th century’s fascination with mechanical music.
The movement has been completely restored and carries a one-year warranty.
