English Brazilian Rosewood Traveling Case

A beautiful brass-bound and accented traveling case. Masterfully crafted by highly skilled cabinetmakers, these cases would accompany their well-to-do owners during travel. Cleverly fitted to carry grooming accouterments as well as necessities of daily life. In fact, it is also known as a nécessaire de voyage. Utilitarian in purpose, yet luxurious and indeed a symbol of one’s status. Initially used by gents, they quickly gained popularity among the aristocratic ladies of the time and became even more ornate and decorative.

This fine example was crafted in exotic Brazilian rosewood and features a hand-tooled leather interior and velvet lining, various storage compartments, a drawer, and an exquisite array of cutglass containers. The glass containers would hold a variety of items from toiletries to writing inks. Further, the case is fitted with two brass locks; securing the contents of these cases was vitally important. This particular cas was fitted with a patented Joseph Bramah lock and is stamped as such. Bramah locks would have been the best available at the time.

The nécessaire is a marvelous antiquity as well as a treasured decorative.
