Late Victorian Ebonized Mahogany Hall Clock by J.J. Elliott & Company of London

Step into the grandeur of Victorian opulence with this English hand-carved monumental hall clock, a masterpiece crafted by the esteemed J.J. Elliott of London.

Standing at a towering height of 9 feet, this clock commands attention with its monumental size and exquisite detailing. This Late Victorian masterpiece seamlessly integrates characteristics of both Rococo and Art Nouveau styles, resulting in a truly captivating aesthetic. The deep ebonized mahogany Rococo carved case is resplendent with opulent scrolls, leaves, and shells, exuding an air of sophistication. Meanwhile, the influence of the Art Nouveau movement is evident in the sinuous vines, subtle florals, and curves that adorn the case, adding a touch of organic elegance. An intricately carved fretwork crown surmounts the clock, while turned and carved columns flank the dial, enhancing its dramatic impact. A whimsical gargoyle stands guard at the base, serving as a playful nod to the Victorian fascination with mythical creatures and supernatural symbolism, further enriching the clock’s charm.

A gilt brass dial serves as the focal point of the clock, a masterpiece in its own right. An intricate hand-engraved dial mask creates the perfect backdrop for a contrasting silvered Arabic numeral chapter ring. In the arch, three subsidiary dials track the seconds and allow a selection between Westminster or Whittington chimes and strike or silent. The clock’s inner workings are equally impressive. An 8-day, 3-weight movement drives the clock to chime every quarter-hour on a set of nine tubular bells.

Founded by James Jones Elliott in 1865, J.J. Elliott & Company of London quickly gained a reputation for excellence, supplying timepieces to royalty, nobility, and discerning collectors worldwide. Their commitment to quality and innovation set them apart, and clocks, like the example shown here, became coveted symbols of status and prestige. Each detail is meticulously crafted, reflecting the unparalleled skill and attention to detail that Elliott clocks are renowned for.
