English Rare Oversized Chinoiserie-Style “Act of Parliament” Wall Clock

This incredible “Act of Parliament” wall clock features monumental size and stature.

“Parliament clocks,” or “taverns clocks,” receive their unique name from a 5 shilling tax imposed on clocks by Britain’s Prime Minister in 1797. This luxury tax led to many private citizens hiding or disposing of their clocks to avoid the charge, thus, resulting in difficulty knowing the time. However, taverns, inns, and pubs used the situation to their advantage, hanging large dial clocks in prominent places to aid the public. Business owners did not mind paying the tax because, as they were now the only location for obtaining the time, townspeople frequented their establishment more often, resulting in increased business.

The monumental size of this particular “Act of Parliament” wall clock indicates that it hung in a sizable and prominent establishment. The beautiful Chinoiserie-style case features a striking ebonized background with hand-painted scenes of pagodas, boats, and flying birds surrounded by lush trees and flowers. The large dial displays the time with brass hands upon hand-painted Roman numeral hour markers and Arabic numeral minute markers. Within, a one weight 8-day timepiece movement powers this impressive clock.

This wonderfully historic clock bears a complete restoration and a one-year warranty.
