French Monumental Two Piece Walnut Cartel Clock and Barometer Set
Exquisite carvings and grand scale characterize this beautiful French cartel walnut clock and barometer set. A cartel clock is a wall clock in an asymmetrical or oblong cartouche design first popularized in the 18th century in France. These are truly exceptional examples of French clockmaking design.
Both the clock and barometer prominently feature comely women flanking each side. Additional carvings include birds and decorative finials on the top and cherubs at the bottom.
The clock has a repoussé brass dial with porcelain cartouche Roman numerals. The barometer also has a brass dial with settings described in French.
The fully restored two-train eight-day clock movement strikes on a gong on the hour and half hour.
