French Patinated Bronze Figural Group by Clodion

A French patinated bronze sculpture, most likely representing a Bacchic group correlating to Bacchus, Greco-Roman god of nature and, most specifically, wine. Here a female satyr or nymph is cavorting with a putti and young satyr. The usual scene for Bacchus and his female followers was one of festivity and frivolity. The sculpture takes on a rich, warm patina and is raised on a gilded base. Also bearing the stamp “Clodion” for Claude Michel Clodion (Fr. 1738-1814). A wonderful and intriguing piece of art.
