Rare German Griesbaum Singing Bird Book Automaton Featuring A Hand Painted Portrait of Lord Nelson

Combining the artistry of fine enameling, silverwork, and mechanical ingenuity, this rare German singing bird box by Griesbaum is fashioned in the form of an elegant miniature book! The ornate tome features an enameled silver case with deep cobalt-blue front and back covers. Delicate gold stars and floral motifs adorn the front and back covers in fine detail. Richly cast silver mounts frame the covers, while polished green hardstones accent each corner.

The front cover centers on a finely hand-painted enamel portrait of the famed British naval commander, Lord Haratio Nelson. The portrait rests within an ornate silver cartouche and is based on the celebrated likeness by the English painter Lemuel Francis Abbott.

A pull lever concealed at the side releases the mechanism. As the cover opens, a colorful, feathered bird rises gracefully through a chased and pierced grille concealed within the book. The bird pivots, flutters, and sings its melody before retreating once more into the case. The mechanical performance remains as enchanting today as it was a century ago, reflecting the extraordinary skill required to create these miniature marvels.

Adding another layer of ingenuity, the book’s spine slides open to reveal a hidden compartment meant to house its bird-form winding key. Decorative clasps cast with female figures further enhance the illusion of a finely bound volume.

Rarely does a singing bird automaton unite mechanical complexity, historical subject matter, and artistic form so successfully. Both a remarkable automaton and an important work of decorative art, this singing bird book represents a fascinating intersection of horology, enameling, and historical commemoration, exemplifying the craftsmanship that made Griesbaum one of the foremost makers of singing-bird automata.
