French Musical Painting Clock Depicting Empress Maria Theresa Crowned King of Hungary

This exquisite French musical painting clock is a captivating fusion of art and function. Crafted in the mid-19th century, it masterfully combines painting, music, and timekeeping in a single piece.

The oil on tin painting showcases the 18th-century Hungarian coronation scene of Empress Maria Theresa of Austria being crowned King of Hungary in 1741. Archduchess Maria Theresa Walburga Amalia Christina (1717–1780) had a most noteworthy reign. At the time, women were not recognized as sovereign rulers, and her succession was met with opposition from neighboring states. To circumvent this, Maria Theresa took the title “King of Hungary,” with her coronation in 1741 laying the groundwork for what would later be referred to as the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

The artist’s use of color highlights the piece wonderfully. Brighter hues draw the viewer’s attention to the central figures, while softer, more muted tones guide the eye toward the edge. A closer inspection reveals the nuanced expressions of those in attendance and exquisite detail in the garments and decor.

A functioning clock, painted as a cartel clock, is cleverly integrated into the scene. A three-train French movement powers the piece for 60 hours. The clock displays the time on Roman numerals with spade and whip hands, and announces each quarter-hour with a Grand Sonnerie strike on two gongs. Within, a Swiss cylinder movement plays four tunes, activated at the hour or played at will.

This enchanting musical painting clock resides in a gilt wood frame and bears a complete restoration and a one-year warranty.
