German Gothic-Form Carved Bracket Clock by Winterhalder & Hoffmeier
This impressive German Gothic-form bracket clock is an outstanding late 19th-century example, powered by a high-quality movement by Winterhalder & Hoffmeier, one of the most respected German clockmaking firms of the period.
The richly carved wooden case is styled in a dramatic, Gothic architectural form, with clustered columns, pointed arches, and deep tracery that lend the clock a strong vertical presence. The case rests on its original carved bracket, which echoes the clock’s Gothic detailing and completes the architectural composition. The painted iron dial displays the time on Roman numerals and is signed for retailer Morath of Liverpool, indicating its original point of sale and export destination.
An 8-day movement powers the clock, striking the quarter hours on two tuned gongs, with a separate hour strike sounding the number of hours. The movement is signed “W & H” for Winterhalder & Hoffmeier.
The clock has been restored and includes a one-year warranty.
