Rare Boulle-Style Tortoise Shell Tall Case Clock
This magnificent tall case clock boasts an ornate, intricate tortoiseshell veneer case. Though retailed by Conrad Felsing of Berlin, this outstanding clock bears all the distinguishing hallmarks of French Boulle work, suggesting the clock was made for export. Famously characterized by elaborate brass ornamentation, sweeping shapes, and tortoiseshell marquetry, this clock exemplifies Boulle design beautifully.
Opulent cast and inlaid depictions of classical faces, birds, jesters, dancing village people, and draping floral swags adorn nearly every inch of the case in ornate detail. The case takes on an exquisite curving shape, wonderfully showcasing the masterful skill needed to veneer and mold tortoiseshell in this manner.
Within, an 8-day movement powers this remarkable clock, which strikes the hour and half-hour on a bell. A dramatic cast brass dial with striking porcelain cartouche Roman numerals display the time with blued steel hands.
This remarkable clock bears a complete restoration and a one-year warranty.
