18th Century Burl Walnut Tall Case Clock by John Bushman

This splendid tall case clock is a marvelous example of traditional English design and excellent early clockmaking accomplishment. The case takes on an understated yet elegant shape with clean lines and a classic flat-top pediment. Two slender columns support the bonnet with cast brass touches decorating the top and bottom. Housed in a richly colored burl walnut case, the clock features exquisite grain throughout.

Residing inside the bonnet of the clock is a lovely dial with gilt brass spandrels adorned with intricate fretwork throughout. The time displays on black Roman numeral hours markers with Arabic minute markers upon a contrasting silvered chapter ring. A convenient strike and a silent dial appears in the dial arch with a subsidiary seconds dial below the 12 o’clock position and a calendar aperture above the 6 o’clock position.

Housed within the clock is an 8-day three-train six-pillar movement. Adding to the complexity is a unique quarter-hour strike that announces the time on a nest of six bells.

The dial bears the signature of clockmaker John Bushman of London. John Bushman (1661-1725) was born in Augsburg, Germany, as Johannes Buschman III to prominent clockmaker Johann Bushmann II. He traveled to London in 1690, where he changed his name to John Bushman and became a celebrated clockmaker in his own right, becoming a Freeman of the Clockmakers’ Company in 1692, the oldest surviving horological institution in the world. Several examples of Bushman’s works appear in the British Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art to this day.

This incredible clock bears a complete restoration and carries a one-year warranty.
