English Pocket Watch by M.J. Tobias of Liverpool Created for the American Market

A compelling fusion of English horology and American sentiment, this pocket watch by M.J. Tobias of Liverpool dates to the mid-1800s and offers both technical refinement and deeply evocative decoration.

Housed in an 800 silver hunter case, the watch opens to reveal its original enamel dial, crisply rendered with Roman numerals and a finely scaled minute track. Most striking is the hand-painted portrait at the dial center, showcasing a Civil War scene, thoughtfully composed and rich in period detail. Figures gathered beside an American flag create a moment of quiet narrative, transforming the dial from a purely functional surface into something far more personal and expressive. Beneath, a subsidiary seconds dial provides both visual balance and precise timekeeping.

The movement is a 17 jewel key-wind and key-set mechanism, characteristic of quality mid-century English watchmaking. It was not uncommon for watch and clockmakers to produce pieces for export, fashioned for the styles and sentiments of their intended location. This example was almost certainly created with the American market in mind, with its patriotic imagery reflecting the tastes and identity of its intended owner during a pivotal moment in U.S. history.
