Spanish Cob Coin Pendant
Often referred to as “pieces of eight,” the Spanish Cob coins were made by cutting metal bars and hand-struck, resulting in their irregular shape. Coins of this type circulated through the Spanish colonies from the 16th through the 18th centuries. This coin’s exact age is unknown, though we do believe it bears significant age due to its irregular shape and off-center strike.
Spanish cobs feature a range of imagery and iconography that evolved over the centuries. In this example, one side features the cross as a symbol of the church and state, while the opposing side bears elements of the Spanish Habsburg coat of arms with castles and lions in the quadrants.
The coin is set within a 14K yellow gold frame, secured with prongs, and suspended from a sturdy bail. A 14K yellow gold box chain measuring 18.75 inches accompanies the pendant.
These coins traveled extensively by sea, and are commonly found in shipwrecks, giving rise to their alluring association with maritime treasure and shipwreck lore. Today, they offer a tangible connection to that history, transformed into a striking and wearable piece of jewelry.
