Glass “End of Day” Walking Stick
This American walking stick is expertly crafted entirely of blown glass. Referred to as an “end of the day” cane, these unique creations were the product of master glassblowers who would use leftover molten glass at the end of their day to create pieces of their choosing.
This example pairs sculptural form with shimmering metallic detail. The cane is crafted of clear glass on the exterior and features a striking layered gold interior. The warm gold contrasts beautifully against the transparent body, creating depth and a subtle glow throughout the piece. The top features a gently curved handle, and the lower portion is finished with a spiral motif, adding visual movement and texture while showcasing the skill required to manipulate glass on such a long, slender scale.
More a statement of artistry and refinement than a utilitarian walking stick, this type of example was often treasured as a conversation or art piece, and a testament to the creativity of the glass blowers after a long day’s work.
