American Double Comb Disc Music Box in Quarter Sawn Oak Case

This handsome American disc music box was made by the Regina Music Box Company of Rahway, New Jersey, the leading American producer of disc-playing music boxes during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its 156-note, double-comb mechanism plays 15½-inch interchangeable discs, producing the full, resonant sound for which Regina machines remain so admired.

The mechanism is housed in a richly figured quarter-sawn oak case retaining its original finish and warm patina. Fine boxwood inlays outline the front panel, complemented by turned columns at each corner and a gently domed lid. Inside, the original Regina lid picture remains in place, depicting a graceful allegorical female figure surrounded by playful cherubs and musical imagery.

The 15½-inch disc remains one of the most accessible formats for collectors and listeners. Countless antique discs are still in circulation, joined by more than a thousand titles available on newly produced discs. Custom discs can even be created, giving this remarkable antique a nearly limitless repertoire extending from period melodies to contemporary favorites.
