French Rare Conical Pendulum Mystery Clock

This extraordinary French conical pendulum mystery clock represents one of the rarest and most captivating forms in this genre. Crafted by Bernoux of Paris, the clock takes the form of the Weaver, an allegorical figure embodying industry and artistry. Executed in two-tone gilt and silvered bronze, the Weaver is shown elegantly spinning yarn, her presence both graceful and symbolic. She stands upon a luxurious rouge marble base with finely cast ormolu mounts.

At the heart of the composition, a skein of yarn serves as the conical pendulum. Its hypnotic circular motion gives the illusion of mystery and magic while discreetly revealing the ingenuity of 19th-century French horology. The concave rouge marble dial, adorned with applied gilt Roman numerals, features a skeletonized glass center that draws the eye to the finely crafted escapement in motion. This clock houses an 8-day movement with an hour and half-hour strike on a bell.

Completing the garniture, a pair of matching ormolu and marble candelabra flank the clock. Their classical form and exquisite detail balance the central figure with elegance and grandeur.

Mystery clocks of this type are rare in any form, but the Weaver ranks among the most elusive and desirable examples. A triumph of French craftsmanship, mechanical invention, and symbolic artistry, this masterpiece would hold a place of pride in any collection.

The statue is signed by the sculptor, Auguste Nadaud.
