American Rare Tilt-Back Fan Scale by the Toledo Computing Scale Co. of Ohio
Rich metallic forest green paint, delicate pinstriping, and gleaming brass accents distinguish this rare two-pound tilt-back fan scale by the Toledo Computing Scale Co. of Ohio, dating to 1903. Its sculptural housing curves outward beneath the broad fan-shaped display, while the original brass weighing pan rests on a separate pedestal connected to the exposed balance arm. The pan’s sweeping rim and lowered front edge give it an elegant, practical form.
Enclosed in a brass frame, the backward-tilting fan display features intricate curved rows of calculating figures for determining prices according to weight. An elaborate gold-tone relief ornament beneath the dial combines scrolling foliage with a central spiral design, echoed by smaller decorative accents around the pan support. Fine pinstriping follows the contours of the body and base, complemented by boldly shaded Toledo lettering.
The reverse is equally handsome, bearing ornamental flourishes and the declaration “Honest Weight No Springs.” An open section below the dial reveals part of the mechanism, adding mechanical interest to the scale. With its unusual profile and exceptional decorative appeal, this early commercial instrument would make a striking addition to a kitchen, shop, pantry bar, or collection of mercantile antiques.
