French Ornately Carved Aneroid Barometer and Thermometer by Perrin
Encased in deep relief carved oak, this French barometer and thermometer is an impressive combination of function and artistry. Embellished throughout the richly colored and patinaed wood are expert carvings of acanthus leaves, fruits, florals, and opposing winged griffins.
Positioned at the top is the skeletonized aneroid barometer measuring changes in atmospheric pressure and pointing to corresponding weather patterns noted around the wood dial. Signed Perrin á Paris. Situated in the bottom half of the case is the thermometer recording temperature in both centigrade and Fahrenheit.
Scientific instruments such as this beautiful example were important tools for predicting weather patterns during the 19th century, and merited prominent placement and artistry for decor. They are just as reliable today for weather monitoring functions, and are beautiful and sophisticated pieces of scientific and mechanical history.
