French Tiffany & Co. Empire Style Crystal Regulator
This impressive regulator clock retailed by Tiffany & Co. is a wonderful example of late 19th-century French clockmaking and Empire style. Superbly crafted, the architectural case is comprised of walnut, brass, and beveled glass panels. Richly appointed throughout, having two free-standing fluted columns with acanthus pediments and capitals, along with beautiful ornamentation of gilt brass ormolu florals, floral garland, swans, masks, and heralds. A large spread-winged eagle with a commanding presence perches atop.
Keeping time is an 8-day pendulum movement that marks the hour and half-hour with a gong strike, while the time is displayed on a brass dial with Roman numerals, Breguet-style hands, and an engine-turned center. The pendulum bob is an embossed Medusa, an artistic element in the decorative genre of Empire design that symbolized protection and authority.
This exquisite timepiece is an elegant and refined fusion of form and function.
