Rare English Three-Train Balance Wheel Skeleton Clock by Evans of Handsworth

This extraordinary three-train skeleton clock is a masterpiece of English horology, crafted by the distinguished firm of Evans of Handsworth in the 1880s. As much a work of art as it is a triumph of mechanical design, the clock features pierced brass plates that take the shape of the soaring Gothic architecture of York Minster Cathedral.

Running for 8 days on a chain fusee movement, this clock features the rare balance wheel escapement. A mechanism that is unusual to find in skeleton clocks in place of a pendulum movement. A complex chiming system strikes the quarter hours on a nest of eight tuned bells. The hours strike on a resonant gong, offering both visual and musical splendor. The time displays on an engraved brass dial, adorned with Gothic Roman numerals, while blued steel hands add an elegant finishing touch. The entire mechanism resides beneath an oval glass dome set upon a wooden base.

The Evans family firm of Handsworth, Birmingham, was celebrated for producing some of the finest skeleton clocks of the 19th century. Known for their exceptional quality and architectural inspirations, Evans clocks were often modeled after great English cathedrals. Their work reflects the Victorian fascination with both Gothic Revival design and the marvels of mechanical science. Making each example a collector’s treasure of historical and cultural significance.

This extraordinary clock has undergone a complete restoration and carries a one-year warranty.
