Russian Malachite and Gilt Silver Figural Sculpture
This charming Russian figural sculpture is artfully and adeptly crafted with malachite, lapis lazuli, and gilt silver figures. Dating to the late 19th century it is characteristic of Russia’s great affinity for malachite in the decorative arts. Gilt silver figures, as compared to the more prevalent use of gilt bronze, elevates the quality and rarity of the piece.
The scene is one of rural Russian life depicting a merchant with his cask of wine in the company of his rooster and dog. Malachite serves as the material for the rectangular base and wine cask as well as a lapis lazuli bench. The gilt silver figures are wonderfully detailed and bear signatures and Russian hallmarks. Gilt accents embellish the cask with trims, a grapevine motif, and ball and claw feet. The sculpture is raised on elaborate scrolling gilt feet.
