Movado Driver’s Style Pocket Watch Converted to Wrist Watch
A refined expression of early 20th-century design, this elegant Movado began life as a pocket watch before being converted to a wristwatch and adapted for modern wear.
The 14K gold case retains the full, rounded proportions of its pocket watch origins, giving the piece a slightly broader and more substantial presence on the wrist. Most notably, the dial is set at a subtle angle, an intentional orientation that transforms the watch into a driver’s-style wristwatch. This offset design allows the time to be read more naturally while the hand rests on a steering wheel, reflecting a period before clocks were fashioned in cars, and when motoring was becoming both a necessity and a luxury, as reflected in the watch designs of the time.
The silver dial features stylized Arabic numerals characteristic of the Art Deco period. Their flowing, slightly whimsical forms add movement and personality, while a subsidiary seconds dial at six o’clock provides both balance and precision. Slender hands sweep cleanly across the dial, reinforcing the watch’s understated refinement. The reverse of the case bears the engraved initials “E B,” a subtle and personal touch that hints at the watch’s earlier life and ownership, adding a layer of history to an already character-rich piece.
Representing a transitional moment in horology, this piece reflects the shift from pocket to wrist-worn timekeeping as tastes evolved in the early 20th century. It remains both a compelling historical object and a distinctive, wearable timepiece.
