American Henry Troemner Balance Beam Scale With Rouge Marble & Brass Claw Feet

Warm brass, richly grained wood, and rouge marble give this rare American balance beam scale an elegance that extends well beyond its practical purpose. Made by Henry Troemner of Philadelphia, it features a deep, curved weighing scoop opposite a shallow circular pan, supported by a marble-topped wooden base. Carved molding enriches the base, while cast-brass claw feet add a sculptural finishing touch.

The graduated beam is marked to 16 ounces and fitted with a sliding brass poise for balancing a load. Two accompanying one-pound weights rest on projecting platforms at either end of the base, completing the scale’s pleasingly balanced arrangement. At the center, the original engraved plaque reads “Henry Troemner Maker Philadelphia,” preserving a handsome connection to its manufacturer.

The contrast of polished metal, reddish marble, and dark wood makes this an especially appealing addition to a collection of antique scales or shopkeeping curiosities. Displayed on a kitchen counter, sideboard, or study console, its graceful form and visible mechanism offer both decorative warmth and mechanical interest.
