Bronze Sculpture After “Accident de Chasset” by Demétre Chiparus

A striking mid-century patinated bronze sculpture after Accident de Chasse (The Hunting Accident) by Romanian-born sculptor Demétre Chiparus. Seated on the ground, an elegantly dressed young woman carefully tends to her injured hound, gently supporting its raised paw as the animal bows its head toward her. The figures’ closeness and the hound’s trusting gesture lend the scene a tenderness that contrasts beautifully with its dramatic title.

Demétre Chiparus was one of the foremost sculptors of the Art Deco period, celebrated for his refined figures inspired by contemporary fashion, theatrical performers, dancers, and moments of narrative expression. In Accident de Chasse, the glamour often associated with his work gives way to a more intimate subject, while the woman’s stylized clothing, graceful pose, and closely cropped hair retain the unmistakable elegance of the Art Deco era.

Finely modeled throughout, the sculpture captures the folds of the woman’s dress, the hound’s muscular form, and the expressive interaction between the two figures. Its warm brown patina is complemented by a richly veined Italian marble base bearing a title plaque.
