Chatelaine Match Safe with Two Bulldogs
An exquisite chatelaine match safe casted in 900 silver dating to the early 1900s. The front of the match safe depicts two adorable enameled bulldogs sitting side by side.
Following the bull-baiting ban of 1835, breeders transformed the hunter English bulldog to a more gentle, loyal companion. This led to bulldogs being highly fashionable among elites and were commonly used in masculine as well as feminine accessories. They symbolized grit, undying loyalty, and domestic comfort. Their distinct droopy face and muscular build inspired artists of the time to create different motifs of these lovable creatures on various items.
On the left hand side is a key ring which allows the match safe to be used as a watch fob, making it convenient to carry man’s best friend wherever you go.
