“Crest of the Wave” Bronze Sculpture

A dramatic large-scale bronze sculpture paying homage to Harriet Whitney Frishmuth’s celebrated Crest of the Wave. Rising 62 inches high, the composition captures a female nude poised effortlessly on one leg atop the curling crest of a wave, her elongated figure seeming to rise with its upward motion.

The pose is particularly expressive: her body twists gently as her head turns downward, one arm sweeps across her torso, and the other reaches high overhead. Her long hair streams behind her in sculptural waves, reinforcing the sense of movement established by the water below. The composition’s remarkable balance gives the figure an almost weightless quality, despite the bronze’s substantial scale and solidity.

Frishmuth (1880–1980) became particularly celebrated for her graceful representations of the female figure, often captured in dance-inspired poses and marked by a pronounced sense of movement. This circa 1970 recast pays tribute to that distinctive aesthetic, creating an impressive sculptural presence from every angle.
