English Desk Clock and Barometer by J.W. Benson

This handsome and sophisticated reversible desk clock-barometer dates to the 1930s and was produced by J. W. Benson of London. It reflects the scientific and mechanical ingenuity of the period and was perhaps used nautically. Expertly crafted in nickel and brass, the piece is elevated, affixed to a stand, and mounted within a frame that allows effortless turning and positioning to display a clock or barometer as desired. Both sides offer crisp, easy-to-read kiln-fired enamel dials with bold black print.

A 15-jewel high-grade Swiss movement powers the clock, which runs for 8 days on a full wind, while the time is displayed in Roman numerals with original blued-steel spade-and-whip hands. The barometer is an aneroid with a Breguet-style hand.

English company J. W. Benson was initially known for offering its own fine timepieces and fine jewelry. As their retail business flourished, they expanded to offer Swiss movements and other fine jewelry. They enjoyed an elite clientele, including royalty and the Admiralty.

This wonderful clock-barometer combines mechanical interest, practical utility, and decorative presence in a single distinguished object.
