English Tall Case Clock by R. Turnbull

A stately English tall case clock crafted by Richard Turnbull of Wooler, Northumberland. It has an elegant silhouette and is crafted with a highly figured flame mahogany case accented with fiddleback crossbanding. The bonnet has a scalloped crest and ball-and-spire finials over free-standing columns flanking the dial, continuing to the waist with a Gothic arch door flanked by three-quarter columns, over a rectangular base section raised on turned feet.

Keeping the time within is an 8-day weight-driven movement that strikes a cast bell at the hour. The time displays on a lovely hand-painted iron dial appointed with Roman numerals, pierced and embossed gilt hands, a seconds dial, and a calendar dial. The painting in the lunette depicts a father reading to his family while the spandrels depict a bucolic countryside scene.

This impressive tall case clock is a testament to fine English clockmaking, designed to serve at the heart of the sophisticated home. Its refined proportions, expert craftsmanship, and dependable timekeeping endure for decorative appeal, horological interest, and functionality.
