English Three-Train Flame Mahogany Tall Case Clock by Jacob Rochat

This impressive English tall case clock dates to the 1780s and resides in a handsome flame mahogany case, its rich figuring particularly prominent across the long trunk door and paneled base. The architectural hood is embellished with carved ornament, flanking columns, and a shaped crest surmounted by finials.

The time is displayed on a beautifully crafted brass dial, with finely cast foliate spandrels surrounding a silvered chapter ring with Roman numerals and an outer minute track. A subsidiary seconds dial occupies the center, while an additional dial in the arch provides a strike/silent selection. The dial is signed “Jacob Rochat, Lincoln’s Inn, London.”

The three-train movement features quarter-hour striking on a nest of bells, creating an elaborate musical strike that sets it apart from a conventional hour-striking clock. The movement was converted to this quarter-hour striking configuration during the 19th century, an important part of the clock’s history.
