Essex Crystal Equestrian Wrist Watch by C.H. Meylan
This exceptional, highly personal wristwatch was a bespoke creation between Marcus & Co. of New York, one of America’s most prestigious luxury jewelers, and the esteemed Swiss-born, American-based watchmaker C. H. Meylan.
Most captivating are the two Essex crystal horse portraits set on either side of the dial. A refined and technically demanding art form, Essex crystals were popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The medium uses reverse-carved rock crystal or glass, meticulously engraved from the back and then hand-painted, creating a striking illusion of depth and lifelike realism when viewed from the front. Here, the portraits depict two individual horses with remarkable sensitivity and detail, suggesting beloved mounts rather than generic imagery—an intimate and expressive choice rarely seen on wristwatches. Crafted in rich 18K yellow gold, the design is thoughtfully rendered with all original equestrian-themed hardware. Each element is fashioned to resemble finely detailed pieces of riding tack.
The time displays on a beautifully proportioned silvered dial by Stern Frères, with applied gold Arabic numerals and gold hands. Powering the watch is a high-grade 17-jewel manual-wind movement, signed C. H. Meylan, Brassus, and numbered 1130, reflecting the exceptional mechanical quality expected from this maker.
Turning the watch over reveals a deeply personal engraving on the case back: “Mrs. Richard Wakeman, Marion, Mass. 1930.”
A rare fusion of fine jewelry, horology, and equestrian artistry, this wristwatch is a functional timepiece and a miniature portrait jewel, created at the height of American luxury craftsmanship.
The watch is presented on a braided cord band measuring approximately 7 inches, adjustable for a custom fit. This watch bears a complete restoration and carries an 18-month warranty.
