French Marble & Bronze Figural Mantel Clock
This charming French mantel clock is crowned by a beautifully modeled pair of patinated bronze putti absorbed in a book together. Seated side by side closely, the two cherubs lean over the open volume with wonderfully natural expressions and gestures, while additional gilt books scattered around them complete the scholarly scene.
The sculptural group rests atop an elegant architectural case of white Carrara marble richly mounted with gilt bronze ormolu. Classical ornament runs throughout, from scrolling foliate panels and delicate beaded borders to the bold acanthus decoration surrounding the dial. The contrast between the dark patinated bronze figures, luminous marble, and brilliant gilding gives the clock an especially handsome and decorative presence.
At center is a convex porcelain dial with Roman numerals, outer minute track, and finely pierced gilt hands. The eight-day movement strikes the hour and half hour on a bell, combining the clock’s elaborate sculptural decoration with the traditional mechanics of a fine French mantel clock.
