French Monumental Hand Carved Tall Case Clock
A splendid French monumental tall case clock. Commanding and beautiful, the case is crafted of walnut and displays wonderful foliate hand carvings. The arched bonnet-top hood with conforming moldings and glass door displays a white porcelain dial within a decorative gilt brass surround to include a lovely pierced lunette. The time displays on Roman numerals with sun hands. The waist section is long and narrow and is nicely appointed with decorative architectural details along with the hood. The base is of scrolled bombe form and is raised on splayed pad feet.
Keeping the time within this stately clock is an 8-day, 2-weight Morbier movement. Morbier movements are from the Franche-Comté region of France near the border of Switzerland at a time when farmers in the area took up a winter “cottage industry” of crafting clock parts. A bell strike marks the hour and repeats the hour strike a couple of minutes after the hour — this striking pattern is related to a prayer clock. Also, a single bell strike marks the half-hour. The dial is signed Hindenlang
And finally, this very distinctive tall case clock bears a full restoration and a one-year warranty.
