French Stick Barometer
This French stick barometer was produced during the mid 19th century at the height of their use for weather forecasting. Measuring atmospheric pressure and weather change, the barometer was particularly insightful for mariners and farmers.
This fine example is more elaborate and complex than most. It was crafted using exotic Brazilian rosewood and appointed with architectural moldings and a cast brass ormolu embellishment over the mercury reservoir at the bottom. The plates are all silvered and engraved brass. Situated at the center flanking the mercury tube are two comparative thermometers of Fahrenheit and Centigrade, each with a Réaumur scale which is an obsolete measure related to water freezing and boiling points. Further, the barometer at the top incorporates sliding scales allowing the user settings for more detailed forecasting.
A wonderful testimonial to scientific methods of the past, a great decorative accent, and still an effective weather forecasting tool.
