French Unusual Serpentine Carriage Clock
To a large extent, carriage clocks reflected personal taste and style. This unique carriage clock is an enchanting blend of Art Nouveau and Aesthetic art characteristics. The joy of nature was a paramount consideration during these eras and is beautifully portrayed throughout this lovely carriage clock.
The ornate gilt-brass case features serpentine shaping and resonates with an elevated level of craftsmanship and design. Hand-painted enamel chrysanthemums, lilies, and poppies appear on the front and side panels, quintessential flowers of the relevant art movements. Each flower exquisitely displays against a fabulous guilloché background in pink hues that evolve to burgundy, detailed with a gilt outline.
Keeping the time within is an 8-day jeweled platform lever escapement movement that marks the hour and half-hour on a tuned gong. The movement also has a repeat-at-will and an alarm function. The time is displays on a silvered chapter ring with stylized Arabic numerals set within the wonderfully embellished mask.
This rare and ornate carriage clock was produced and signed by Aiguilles of France. Aiguilles & Co. timepieces are sought after and valued for their high-quality craftsmanship and unique artistry, as is the case with this beautiful example.
