Rare German Lüsterweibchen Luminaire

Equal parts sculpture and functional lighting, this remarkable German Lüsterweibchen, or Luminaire, is a striking survival of a centuries-old Germanic lighting tradition. Emerging during the late Middle Ages and remaining popular well into the 19th century, these imaginative chandeliers combined masterful wood carving with natural antlers to create dramatic hanging fixtures.

Here, a beautifully carved young woman rests gracefully upon a scrolling support, delicately suspending a richly jeweled orb-form candleholder from one hand. The piece showcases extraordinary vitality through deeply undercut carving and expressive movement. The heavy folds of her garments tumble naturally across her form, the sleeves and gather convincingly around the arms. The pleating of her collar and bodice demonstrates the remarkable skill required to transform solid wood into convincing fabric. The original polychrome finish further enhances the illusion, lending warmth and depth to every fold and contour.

Balancing the composition are a pair of natural stag antlers that serve as the luminaire’s arms. Suspended below, the pierced brass orb is set with colorful faceted glass “jewels,” surrounding a single candle socket that would have scattered warm, flickering light through the openwork mount, creating a dazzling effect in the room.
