Utagawa Kunisada Woodblock Print “Kajiwara no Genta”

A finely preserved Japanese woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada (1786–1865), one of the three most important ukiyo-e artists of woodblock prints in the nineteenth century, specializing in portrayals of Kabuki actors. The composition portrays the Kabuki character holding an open fan, his expressive pose and elaborate costume rendered with elegance and refinement. Delicately colored landscape elements frame the figure, creating a harmonious balance between the portrait and the setting. Particularly noteworthy are the print’s rich original colors, strong impression quality, and visible wood grain.
