Utagawa Kunisada Woodblock Print of Tomisuka Zayemon
A striking Japanese woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada (1786–1865), one of the most influential ukiyo-e artists of woodblock prints in the nineteenth century, specializing in portrayals of Kabuki actors. This work depicts an actor portrayed in a moment of focused intensity. Set against a backdrop of bamboo, the figure is rendered in bold lines and expressive features, wearing richly colored robes. The print retains very good color, impression quality, and visible wood grain. Some foxing is present on the paper surface, consistent with age. Presented in a later frame, this is an appealing example of Kunisada’s celebrated portraiture and the enduring artistry of Japanese woodblock printing.
