Victorian Era “Night and Day” Shell Cameo

An exceptionally detailed shell cameo depicts the classical allegorical figures of Night and Day, personified as the goddesses Nyx and Eos (Aurora in Roman mythology). Shown in profile and draped in flowing classical garments, the two figures represent the eternal passage from darkness to dawn. Flowers are intricately woven through their hair, while a crescent moon and stars appear above, and a winged eagle spreads its wings at the base, completing the richly symbolic composition.

The artist has skillfully used the shell’s natural layers to create a striking contrast between the luminous white figures and the warm, translucent background. The artist paid particular attention to the goddesses’ distinct expressions, elaborately arranged hair, delicate floral details, and deeply modeled folds of their garments.

A delicate bezel of seed pearls surrounds the carving, set within an elaborate pierced filigree frame of 14K yellow and white gold. Applied leaf and rose motifs introduce further dimension and complement the cameo’s finely carved botanical details. Dating to circa 1890, this impressive jewel may be worn as either a brooch or pendant.

Circa 1890
