Victorian Walking Stick with Gold Filled Handle

A handsome walking stick dating to 1890 that embodies the refined elegance and style of the late Victorian era. More than a practical accessory, walking sticks or canes often commemorated achievements, events, esteem, or sentiment. They could be meaningful objects as well as fashionable ones.

Finely crafted with a gold-filled knob handle, and artfully embellished with foliate and floral decoration. The top is mounted on a black lacquered wood shaft. Rich materials and decorative detailing lend the piece an air of sophistication, while its engraved inscription, “I E M Aug 21 1890,” provides a tangible connection to the original recipient.

Walking sticks of this nature were an essential component of a gentleman’s attire in the late 19th century, subtle indicators of status, taste, and individuality. Today, this example survives as both a functional object and a compelling historical artifact, evocative of Victorian social customs and the artistry of the era.

This walking stick measures 36 inches.
